Frequently asked questions

What do you do in a Hypnobirthing class?

Hypnobirthing uses is a complete birth preparation course, focusing on reducing fear in childbirth to enable you to get excited about the birth of your baby, and ultimately welcome them into the world gently and calmly. By learning the practical side of what happens in birth, some of the choices you may need to make and what you 'can and can't do', you will be able to plan the birth that is right for you and your baby.

We also learn breathing, visualisations and techniques to reduce fear so you remain calm and in control throughout your birth process. It is really important to learn how and why these techniques are so effective, so that you can have complete trust in your body and your baby.

If I do Hypnobirthing, will I have a pain-free birth?

The aim of Hypnobirthing is to have a postive, not perfect, birth and for you to have all the tools to remain calm and in control of your body and the decisions you make throughout your pregnancy, birth and beyong. Whilst we cannot guarantee a pain-free birth, we do know that it can impact your experience significantly, and is often more successful if you have practiced regularly. Around 60-70% of Hypnobirthing Mums require no pain relief at all. We know that pain is often caused by fear, which creates tension in the body so by eliminating fear, we find pain-relief is often not needed. Around 20-25% may require mild pain-relief, such as gas and air. The remaining 5-10% fall under special circumstances such as needing more intervention. Even if they do need an induction or cesearean, these Mums still report finding their Hypnobirthing techniques really successful for remaining calm and comfortable throughout. No matter how your birth journey goes, Hypnobirthing is helpful if you want to increase your liklihood of having a natural birth and remain in control in any circumstance.

What is the best time to start a Hypnobirthing course?

Between 20 and 30 weeks so that you fit in plenty of practice, but still works great if you complete the course before giving birth. They tend to book up far in advance so please do book ahead. If you are over 35 weeks, don’t worry. We will try to arrange a one-to-one and lots of women have gone on to have lovely births using Hypnobirthing techniques having done the course later in their pregnancy.

Who is Hypnobirthing suitable for?

There are normally a mixture of first time and second time mums. May want a calm gentle birth because of a previous negative experience or want to approach birth in a positive way. If you want to be calm, confident and in control about your birthing experience then Hypnobirthing is for you.

Should I bring my birth partner and what happens if they are sceptical?

Hypnobirthing courses provide beneficial techniques for both you and your birth partner, so yes it is really important that they attend too. This means you will both be on the same page feeling prepared and positive for the birth of your baby.

I see lots of birth partners come in sceptical and the techniques will still work even if you are sceptical, the main thing is understanding everything in the course and doing the practice. Having said that, partners and Mums don’t tend to leave with any scepticism, but feel they understand the logical, practical and extremely effective techniques. In fact, I would say the biggest skeptics often become the biggest fans, once they see how much it works (check out my reviews, especially from Dads, where they are often quite open about this).

What happens if I am birthing independently (without a birth partner)?

You are super welcome and I have taught many women who have attended on their own and had beautiful, independent Hypnobirths. You are welcome to bring your doula, friend, mum or family member to some or all of the course and are also welcome to come without them. You are also eligible for a discount so pop me a message and I will give you the code.

I can't afford the course fee, can you help?

Discounts are sometimes available to those who want to do the course, but are unable to afford it. I can also offer payment plans so that you can pay in instalments. Everything is included in the course payments, so there are no extras. Just give me a call and we can talk it through on the phone.

Some parents find it useful to think about how they are willing to spend on a pram, and whether it is worth it to spend a similar amount on a calm, gentle, birth experience feeling in control for Mum, baby and birth partner.

Where are the classes?

Classes are taught from my home in Bedmisnter, South Bristol. I find this gives a warm, friendly and informal environment where everyone is happy to ask questions and get to know other people in the group.

How do I use my free Pregnancy Yoga Classes?

Pregnancy Yoga classes are held at The Southville Centre on Beauley Road every Tuesday from 7.15pm to 8.45pm. You can book online on anytime that suits you.

Anything else?

There is no such thing as a silly question, so please do get in touch and ask me. I am always super happy to help.

How do I know if this is the right course for me?

I want to make sure that this course is 100% right for you. If you have any questions about dates (sometimes we can tweak them to suit you) or anything else, please do get in touch.

If would like to know what others thought, why not check out my reviews on Google and Facebook to see what other parents thought about these courses.

Have you had to do a special training to teach Hypnobirthing?

Yes and it was important to me to undertake this training with the Gold Standard in this industry, KG Hypnobirthing. One of the oldest schools in the UK, KG Hypnobirthing is an in-depth training programme to build confidence in pregnancy and birth. Their experience in this field is unlike any other school, but they also have a modern, relevant approach. This course has been recently endorsed by Russell Brand and Deliciously Ella, huge advocates for Hypnobirthing techniques.

Do you offer an online course?

There are no authorised home-study courses and I strongly beleive, that to get the best out of your Hypnobirthing journey, a face-to-face, in-person approach is best. Hypnobirthing is designed to be taught in a class setting and I have certainly found that this gets much better results, as well as you meeting other wonderful, local parents-to-be.
